Kudos (www.growkudos.com), the award-winning service for maximizing the reach and impact of research publications, and Clarivate Analytics, formerly the Intellectual Property & Science business of Thomson Reuters, have announced the results of a pilot integration between the Kudos platform and the ScholarOne publication workflow system. The companies partnered earlier this year to collect plain language summaries from authors at the point of submission; these summaries are automatically distributed to Kudos to streamline the process by which authors can increase the chances of their work being found, read, and cited.
Six publishers – Bioscientifica, The British Editorial Society of Bone & Joint Surgery (publishers of The Bone & Joint Journal), Canadian Science Publishing, Emerald, Future Science Group and Wiley – participated in the pilot programme, with a subset of journals for which authors were invited to add plain language summaries. The pilot was a success, with 42% of accepted authors choosing to add explanatory text; the quality of the summaries is also high, making it easier for a broader range of potential readers to find and understand the work, thereby helping to increase its impact.
Tony Roche, Publishing Director at Emerald, comments, “We have worked with Kudos since 2014, and during that time have seen that authors explaining and sharing their work via Kudos does correspond to increased usage of those publications. We therefore joined the pilot to see whether we could further increase author uptake by bringing Kudos further upstream in our workflow. It’s exciting to see that this has worked, and we hope now to roll out the ScholarOne–Kudos integration across all our publications.”
Josh Dahl, Head of Publishing & Associations at Clarivate Analytics, adds, “We are always looking for opportunities to enhance our services and ensure that they remain state-of-the-art in terms of integration with the latest tools in use by publishers and authors. Kudos is a good fit for us in this respect. We’re happy that by supporting publishers’ implementation of Kudos, we’re helping them not only to streamline their pre-publication workflows, but also to maximize their post-publication usage.”
The success of the pilot means Kudos and ScholarOne are now working towards making integration an option for all mutual clients of these systems; if you are interested in adding journals to the next phase of this programme, contact your Kudos and ScholarOne account managers. Kudos representatives will also be available to meet at the following forthcoming events:
