Cengage Learning, a leading educational content, software and services company, today named its Boston, MA office as the new corporate headquarters for its global business. In an unprecedented move, the company is establishing its central operations in the Channel Center, located in Boston’s Innovation District. More than 500 positions will be permanently located in the Boston headquarters while Cengage Learning continues to maintain operations in more than 20 countries around the world and many locations in the United States.
Home to some of the nation’s leading publishers and world-class companies immersed in the education technology space, Boston is quickly establishing itself as the leader in EdTech. The city offers the nation’s strongest network of colleges and universities in addition to a vibrant startup culture and strong network of investors interested in EdTech, making it an ideal backdrop for Cengage Learning.
“We believe that Boston is one of the key centers for future growth of education technology and as a result, we believe Cengage Learning should be an anchor of the community,” said Michael Hansen, chief executive officer, Cengage Learning. “At Cengage, we have some of the most talented and forward-thinking minds in the industry. Just as students thrive in an innovative and engaging classroom setting, so shall Cengage, with a new headquarters in one of the most engaging and innovative cities in the world.”
With a new headquarters in the Innovation District, Cengage Learning will continue to place an increased emphasis on the research and development of new digital products for the higher education, K–12, professional and library markets worldwide. The company is making a marked shift in focus towards students in the development process and it seeks to put student workflow and faculty needs at the center of every product it builds, ultimately accelerating student engagement and transforming the learning experience. In Boston, surrounded by teachers, learners and educational institutions, Cengage Learning will be even more well-equipped to understand its end-users and keep a pulse on the rapidly evolving education landscape.
“We welcome Cengage Learning to our business community and congratulate them as new members of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce,” said Paul Guzzi, chief executive officer, Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce. “Boston is a truly exceptional place to live, work and do business. We look forward to having Cengage Learning as a partner in our mission of driving economic growth throughout the region while building a vibrant and inclusive business community. Cengage’s leadership will help build Boston’s important Education Technology industry, further increasing Boston’s competitive advantage in education, which is a goal of the Chamber’s 2014 advocacy agenda.”
Cengage Learning is currently looking to add approximately 50 full-time positions to its staff in Boston. The company will also look to support local vendors and community organizations. Cengage Learning encourages its executives and employees to contribute as active members of the communities in which they reside through paid volunteer days and a company-match charitable giving program.
