The American Society for Microbiology (ASM) has begun a new, multi-faceted publishing partnership with John Wiley and Sons Inc. Wiley, a global leader in research and education, will be the official copublisher and distributor of the ASM Press references, textbooks, and non-journal publications. ASM and Wiley will also collaborate on an online resource for clinical microbiologists, clinicians, researchers, and students.
“We believe this new partnership will be transformative for ASM publishing,” said Stefano Bertuzzi, CEO of ASM. “Leveraging Wiley’s extensive publishing knowledge and network to expand the reach of ASM Press titles will ensure growth and new audiences and promote and advance the microbial sciences.”
Under the new agreement, ASM Press will bring its venerable list of educational, reference, professional, and trade book titles to Wiley with plans to strategically grow title output over the course of the partnership. Publisher of the gold-standard reference Manual of Clinical Microbiology since 1970, ASM Press also produces the most widely adopted textbooks in virology, bacterial genetics and pathogenesis, molecular biotechnology, and responsible conduct of reseach. As the official copublisher and distributor of the ASM Press titles, Wiley will become ASM’s exclusive print and digital sales and distribution partner of the existing backlist of ASM Press titles.
In addition to copublishing and distribution, Wiley and ASM will partner with Atypon, a division of Wiley, to develop a new online subscription service utilizing ASM’s flagship clinical microbiology content. This online resource will present comprehensive knowledge of pathogenic and clinically relevant microbes, current microbiology procedures and protocols, and rich case study and contextual information. Expected to launch in 2020, the product is created specifically to meet the needs of clinical microbiologists as students, researchers, and professionals.
“The American Society for Microbiology is one of the world’s preeminent scientific societies, and we are thrilled they recognize Wiley’s expertise in essential publishing and digital innovation,” said Matt Leavy, Executive Vice President, Education Publishing for Wiley. “Together, we will continue to grow ASM’s publishing while embarking on a first-of-its-kind customer-driven content delivery platform that will meet the unique needs of clinical lab professionals, infectious disease clinicians, students, and researchers.”
“I look forward to better serving ASM’s vast clinical microbiology community through a new, groundbreaking digital content platform that will allow us to swiftly adapt to the rapidly changing landscape of this field and to provide our clinical community with the most current, updated information,” Bertuzzi added.
“ASM and Wiley together will deliver a unique digital resource based on ASM’s globally utilized clinical microbiology references, applying Atypon’s solution to keep subscribers up to date by providing well-organized, actionable, and timely content as our knowledge of infectious diseases increases and the practice of clinical microbiology advances,” said Christine B. Charlip, Director of ASM Press.
