Max-Planck-Gesellschaft (MPG) and IOP Publishing (IOP) have announced a new pilot agreement to help grow the society’s participation in open access publishing.
The new Institutional Research Licence has been developed by IOP to enable institutions to manage the cost of hybrid article publication charges (APCs) against their journals licence fee, enabling institutions to support the participation of their researchers in open access publishing. IOP is working with MPG to develop systems and processes to support this new pilot.
The agreement covers hybrid APCs in qualifying journals, meaning corresponding authors from MPG will not need to directly pay a fee or take any additional action to arrange open access publication.
Steven Hall, Managing Director for IOP Publishing, said: “We are delighted to make this agreement, and it builds on the other offsetting agreements we have. MPG’s researchers want to be able to publish in journals they trust, and this agreement enables them to do that, while meeting MPG’s goal of increasing its OA participation.”
Dr. Ralf Schimmer, Head of Scientific Information Provision at Max Planck Digital Library said: “We are happy to engage in this forward-looking partnership. IOP is among the most relevant publishers for scientists of the Max Planck Society. With this new agreement we grant our researchers the opportunity to publish their articles fully open access across a majority of IOP journals, and at the same time we shift a significant portion of our previous spending from the subscription system. This agreement is another landmark in the transformation of scholarly publishing from subscription to open access”
The agreement runs from 2018 to 2020.
